Uskomatonta Poliisin pelleilyä

Viikonloppuna tapahtunut henkilötieto vuoto on saamassa farssin piirteitä.

Alkuperäinen täydellinen lista ei aluksi ollut tavalliselle netin käyttäjän kovin helppo löytää, ellei liikkunut sopivilla foorumeilla. Tilanne kuitenkin muuttui hyvin nopeasti kun Googlen hakutuloksien kärkeen nousi Mikko Hyppösen Twitter viesti jossa mainittiin maagiset sanat "--------.txt" "tietovuoto". Vielä sunnuntai iltana (6.11.2011) alkuperäinen lista löytyy käyttämällä ensimäistä hakusanaa ja painamalla Googlen tunnettua "I'm Feeling Lucky" nappia.

Voiko listan tietoja käyttää väärin?
Kansalaisia on vuosia varoitettu identiteettivarkauksista, ja kun kerran sattuu iso sellainen niin silloin se ei olekaan kovin vaarallista, "Ihmisten, joiden tiedot ovat nyt päätyneet internetiin ei tarvitse olla huolissaan" - KRP:n ylitarkastaja Sari Kajantie. Silti Cert-fi:n päällikkö Erka Koivunen muistuttaa, "ettei kenenkään yksityisen pidä yrittää löytää ja kopioida listaa omalle koneelleen. Listan levittäminen ja henkilötietojen väärinkäyttäminen voi täyttää rikoksen tunnusmerkistön", eli kappas vaan ilmeisesti listan sisältö on sittenkin aika merkittävä.
Totuus on että yhdistelmällä nimi - sähköpostiosoite - henkilötunnus - puhelinnumero voi aiheuttaa erittäin paljon pientä harmia, esim. monissa ajanvarauspalveluissa nämä tiedot riittävät varamaan sekä perumaan aikoja kuten lääkäri ja terveyspalveluja tuottavat Mehiläinen ja Terveystalo.

Mitä Poliisin tulisi tästä farssista oppia?
Miksi poliisin web sivut ovat täynnä grafiikkaa ja ylimpänä sivulla pyörii vielä Flash animaatio? Jos ollaan julkaisemassa jotain joka todella kiinnostaa kansaa niin siihen pitää myös varautua. Helpoin tapa on muuttaa etusivu mahdollisimman kevyeksi, laittaa linkki julkaistuun tietoon (katso seuraava kysymys) ja lopuksi laittaa linkki normaali etusivulle. Mielenkiintoista on että vielä tiistai aamupäivällä sivut ovat erittäin tahmeat eikä listan lataaminen näytä onnistuvan, tämä osittain koska lista ei löydy etusivulta vaan käyttäjän pitää etsiä listaa ja tällä tavalla aiheuttaa lisää kuormitusta. Lista nimittäin löytyy KRP:n sivulta, minne etusivulta ei johda linkkiä.

Miksi Poliisin julkaisema lista on PDF muodossa?
Jos kerran sivut on muutenkin tukossa niin olisi hyvä julkaista lista tilaa ja verkkokaistaa säästävässä muodossa (vaikka txt muodossa) jolloin listan koko pienentyisi 1,4 megatavusta 251,5 kilotavuun.

Poliisin ja median yhteistyö
Poliisin lista pääty maanantai illalla medialle ja saatiin lopulta julkaistua, vai saatiinko? Nyt uutissivuilla liikkuu erinimisiä ja muotoisia listoja jotka ilmeisesti ovat poliisin lista mutta tästä ei voi olla täysin varma. Yleisradion sivuilla on krp_luettelo_08112011.pdf niminen tiedosto. Turun Sanomien sivuilla on linkki hxxp://www.slideshare.net/Mondeo123/lista-10059048 , kuka on käyttäjä Mondeo123, onkohan kyseessä poliisin Ford mondeo auto, ja miksi lista on amerikkalaisella palvelimella? Poliisin alkuperäis listan nimi on kuitenkin Luettelo_1.pdf joka siis löytyy täältä. Juuri sunnuntaina Viestintävirasto ohjeistaa kansalaisia, "Älkää yrittäkö etsiä tietovuotolistaa itse" ja varoittaa verkossa olevista tarkistus palveluista. Jos poliisi olisi julkaissut tarkistussumman (checksum) listasta niin listan olisi voinut hakea ihan mistä vaan ja lukija olisi voinut tarkistaa oman kopionsa aitouden.

Eli poliisin olisi heti pitänyt lähettää lista sähköpostilla (tai vaikka USB-muistitikulla) medialle ja julkaissut muuten lähes tyhjälle poliisi.fi etusivulle vain tarkistussumma arvon.

Kun tilanne laantuu niin toivon todella että viranomaiset selvittävät miksi kaikki epäonnistui ja huolehtivat että ensi kerralla asiat hoidetaan paremmin.
Mitä jos kyseessä olisi ollut hengenvaarallinen tilanne ja viranomaisten olisi pitänyt nopeasti julkaista vastaava määrä tietoa samalla varmistaen että tiedon mahdollinen peukalointi huomataan, miten tämä olisi hoidettu?

Cutting a hanging SSH connection loose

Here is something useful I learned a couple of weeks ago. To cut a hanging SSH connection loose and to free the terminal only requires the following characters/keystrokes:

[Enter]~.

However on some keyboard layouts e.g. sv/fi, the tilde needs an space so the keystrokes are:

[Enter][AltGr]~[Space].

HTTP Error 403

Occasionally, I receive the following error while trying to access a website with the built in web browser on my LG Optimus One (P500) Android Froyo even tho other applications using the network work fine:

HTTP Error 403: The service you requested is restricted

The service you requested is restricted and not available to your browser

The restriction can be based on your IP-address, hostname, browser software, time-of-day or other variables. Most likely you requested a service that was made available to a restricted subnet.

A reboot resolves the error but there is an easier and a lot faster way to fix it, put the phone into airplane/flight/offline mode and then straight back to normal mode.

Preparing for change, simple free Spotify playlist export

If the uppcomming changes to Spotify will happen I guess a lot of people, including me, wish to save their Spotify playlists.

If the only thing you need to save is artist and track name as text in a list, then it's easy:

The only thing you need is OpenOffice.org but apparently also MS Word works.

In Spotify:

1. Select one track by clicking on it.
2. Press Ctrl-a
3. Press Ctrl-c or press the right mouse button and in the popup menu select Copy HTTP Link.

In OpenOffice.org:

1. Create new empty Text Document.
2. Press Ctrl-v or press the right mouse button and in the popup menu select Paste.

Thats it.

I find this change really disappointing since the free version of Spotify has been an innovative and useful service, a radio station with commercials but where you as a listener can select the music. Spotify has been excellent way to explore old music and to find new still fairly unknown artists.

Are EliteBooks really Elite, a HP EliteBook laptop review

This blog post has been waiting in edit state for a few months now, so lets finish and publish it.

So this is a short and compact HP EliteBook laptop review summarizing my experience of two HP EliteBooks, 8540p and 8440p.

HP EliteBook 8540p 15.6"
- Too small CR key
- Too small dash symbol (visually)
- Arrow keys too tight

+ Matte display
+ Good, clear screen
+ USB3
+ fast processor

The machine is really fast (Intel Core i7 and SSD) so compiling code is a joy, but in my opinion the keyboard is completely unusable for both programming and using the command line, and for me that is a show stopper.

HP EliteBook 8440p 14"
- Only 2 mouse buttons
- really bad black reproduction
- strange contrast
- poor viewing angle

+ Better keyboard than 15.6" model. Home, PgUp, PgDn and End keys still awkwardly placed.
+ Matte display

Even if the machine is a bit thick, the size is otherwise really OK for mobile work. However the display panel is the worst I have seen in 20 years. It really reminds me of laptop monitors from the late eighties/early ninetieths. The eye strain produced bu the display is absolutely staggering.

Both:
- Surprisingly sharp lid metal locks, watch your fingers.
- cheap matte aluminium palmrest that feels like a chalkboard.
- Ugly, non professional design (debatable)
- Idiotic trackpad button wiring. See below.

The track point mouse buttons are hardwired with touch pad buttons so you can't disable the trackpad while using track point. If you do, then you loose the trackpoint buttons and are left with a way to move the cursor but you can't click.
Having the buttons disabled while the machine is docked easily leads to an surprisingly challenging exercise in using the keyboard to reactivate the buttons (or borrow a mouse) if you forget to reactivate the buttons when you take the machine off the dock. IBM/Lenovo ThinkPads never had this problem.

+ sturdy monitors, they don't wobble and the hinges feel solid and smooth.

Conclusions:
Both machines are absolute toys compared to IBM/Lenovo ThinkPads and feel cheaper than HP ProBooks. Also the design of the machines are childish looking in a business world where matte black or white/silverish products dominate (Lenovo ThinkPads and Apple).

P.S.
To answer the question in the title, no they are not elite.

MS tools from the past

Microsoft Windows 7 still have some rudiments left from MS-DOS 5 and Windows 3.0. The console based ASCII editor edit and the graphical configuration file editor sysedit are still present and can be started with the run dialog. Observe the old style 3D checkbox and the 2D text edit in the sysedit screenshot.
It's fully understandable to include a console based editor but one can just speculate why sysedit still hangs around.

Lost without DNS

Every now and then I encounter a misconfigured lan or wlan network with nonworking DNS. This usually happens when I'm in a hurry to get a connection and have no time to figure out the correct DNS server.
There is a solution!
Two simple, free, public, and foremost, easy to remember DNS servers are hosted by Google:

8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

It may not be wise to use these all the time e.g. for privacy reasons, but for quickly getting things to work these are great.
